Yoga in Topsham – Hatha Flow at Kiva & Zen Studios
If you’re looking for yoga in Topsham, I’m lucky enough to teach my weekly Hatha Flow class from one of my favourite wellbeing spaces in the area – Kiva & Zen Studios.
Located at Dart Business Park on Topsham Road, Kiva & Zen is a dedicated yoga and holistic wellbeing studio offering a range of yoga classes, treatments and wellbeing experiences. It’s a beautiful space to step away from the busyness of everyday life and spend an hour focusing on yourself.
Yoga in Topsham with Anne Harrison
My Wednesday evening yoga class at Kiva & Zen is a Hatha-based flow class, suitable for a range of experience levels.
You don’t need to be flexible, experienced or particularly “good” at yoga to come along.
My aim is to create a friendly, relaxed environment where you can explore yoga at a level that works for your own body.
Throughout the class, I offer different options and variations for postures. This means that rather than trying to make your body fit a particular shape, you can find the version of the posture that feels appropriate for you.
Some weeks we might move through a stronger, more flowing practice, while at other times the class may be slower and more grounding. I like to bring different elements of yoga into my classes, including Hatha, Vinyasa Flow, Yin and Restorative practices.
There is also plenty of opportunity to use yoga props.
Props aren’t just for beginners. A block, strap, bolster or blanket can help you find more space in a posture, provide support, make a movement more accessible or even increase the challenge.
A small and friendly yoga class
One of the things I particularly like about teaching at Kiva & Zen is the size of the class.
With a small group, there is space for me to see how people are moving and offer individual guidance where appropriate. It also creates a lovely community atmosphere without the class feeling overwhelming.
Whether you are completely new to yoga or have been practising for years, there is room for you.
You can work at your own level, take a quieter option when you need it, or explore something a little more challenging when it feels right.
Five weeks, one theme
I also structure my classes around a theme, usually exploring it over a five-week period.
Rather than having five completely unrelated classes, this gives us the opportunity to revisit ideas, postures and movements and gradually develop them.
You might notice something different in your body each week, discover that a posture feels more accessible, or simply become more familiar with the movement.
You don’t have to attend every week to enjoy the classes, but coming regularly can give you the opportunity to really explore the theme and develop your practice.
And after each five-week theme, I often turn the flows into yoga practices that you can follow at home, giving you the opportunity to continue your practice between classes.
Continue your yoga practice at home
Many of the five-week themes I teach in Exminster and Topsham eventually become yoga flows on my website.
I use the same sequences we’ve explored together in class so you can return to them at home.
This can be particularly helpful if you’d like to practise between classes or revisit a flow after we’ve moved on to our next theme.
You’ll find practices exploring mobility, strength, balance, relaxation and different areas of the body, alongside some of the ideas from yoga philosophy that we discuss in class.
Why I love Kiva & Zen Studios
The venue itself is an important part of the experience.
Kiva & Zen Studios was created as a space for yoga, holistic therapies and wellbeing. It offers a range of classes and treatments alongside yoga, including practices such as Yin, Kundalini and Ashtanga, as well as massage, Reiki, sound healing, crystal healing, breathwork and other wellbeing experiences. (Kiva and Zen Studios)
I love that yoga is not treated as something separate from wellbeing here.
The studio has a calm, nurturing atmosphere, making it a lovely place to arrive after a busy day and give yourself some time to breathe, move and slow down.
Kiva & Zen also provides yoga mats and equipment for its weekly classes, so you don’t need to arrive carrying a car full of yoga props! (Kiva and Zen Studios)
More than just my Wednesday yoga class
I also offer one-to-one wellbeing sessions at Kiva & Zen on Wednesday afternoons.
These can include:
- Private yoga
- Nutritional therapy
- Wellbeing coaching
These sessions give us the opportunity to focus much more specifically on you, your goals and what you need from your wellbeing practice.
For example, a private yoga session might focus on building strength, improving mobility, working with balance or simply developing confidence in your practice.
Nutritional therapy allows us to explore your individual health and nutrition needs, while wellbeing coaching provides space to look at lifestyle, habits, priorities and the changes you would like to make.
Sometimes these approaches can complement one another beautifully.
